Firewood Facts

A standard cord of wood has a volume of 128 cubic feet, 4 ft. high and 8 ft. long. Face cords do not have standard measurement, so volume can not be determined. Air dried wood with 25% moisture will yield about 5,800 BTU's per pound.

Maintenance of Your Johnson

We all know that when we buy a car we have to maintain it with regular oil changes, checking the tire pressure, etc. What about an outdoor wood furnace? Outdoor wood furnaces must be maintained too. An oxygen inhibitor chemical must always be used to minimize corrosion. We sell Water Treatment 101 to meet this need. Water must be tested at least annually, and treatment added as required. If you use antifreeze in your furnace it must be checked at least once per year for concentration, as well as sight checked for color to make sure that it isn't discolored indicating the need to change the antifreeze. Any furnace that contains antifreeze that has been overheated needs to be drained and flushed, and new antifreeze added. Every two to three years the furnace must be drained and flushed. It is our recommendation that when performing the drain and flush that all systems be cleaned with Prep 102 prior to refilling. Prep 102 is a metal cleaner and conditioner. The Prep 102 must be used prior to filling all new furnaces to remove any byproducts of the manufacturing process ensuring that you begin with good, clean metal. It is also very important to use only soft water when filling your furnace, as hard water can cause lime scale build up on your furnace the same way that it causes lime scale build up on faucets and fixtures in your home.  This lime scale causes reduced heat transfer, and can cause under deposit corrosion which can lead to leaks.  We sell softening kits that can meet this need if you don't have soft water available at your tap.
Additionally other maintenance must be performed:

  • Always use a filter system
  • Daily Maintenance:
Check water level and add water as needed.
Check door gasket for proper seal and fit; adjust as needed.
Check for creosote buildup and clean as needed.
  • Weekly Maintenance:
    Remove ashes as required.
Check bypass and chimney for excess creosote and remove as needed.
  • Annual Maintenance:
When done using the furnace for the season clean and scrape all ashes from stove paying special attention to the corners (both front and back); cap the chimney to avoid water entering the firebox; coat the inside of the furnace with waste oil to protect; and check all blowers, solenoids, and cotter pins.

More information on maintenance and care can be found in our owner's manual

By properly maintaining your furnace you will extend the life of it and protect your investment.
